The wine industry uses oak from Europe and America for the flavouring of wine. The timber is roasted to extract the flavours and tannins which are enhanced during the wine ageing process. This timber is used once and then discarded. Ambro have developed a system to recover and store this raw material, recondition it, and transform it from an ugly duckling to a bespoke, elegantly aged timber product.

‘VinWood’ has been created with timber bi-product from the wine industry, where discarded oak staves (boards) are collected, re-processed and re-purposed to create an exotic and desirable timber finish.

Due to the distorted nature of this timber, ‘VinWood’ can only be produced using the ‘SaveWood’ technology.

FUNDAMENTALS

  • The timber is sourced from wineries within SA.

  • 50,000 lineal meters of timber has been rescued so far.

  • Timber is carefully stacked and air dried for 12 months, stabilising its moisture content.

  • Reclaiming a discarded timber product from the wine industry, giving it a new life, look and purpose.

  • Timber is oak, a hardwood which is stable and has inherent strength.

  • It can have a sawn finish – lightly sanded, allowing the roasted timber characteristics to come through.

  • A fully aged, textured finish with minimal intervention allows the natural beauty, undulations and life of the timber to shine.

  • A fully refined, sanded, flush and filled smooth finish can also be created.

It’s engineered!
